There have been highly productive years and others that were less so. However, over the past 13 years, painting has evolved into a mode of expression and sometimes a means of escape from the burdens of everyday concerns.

I am sharing this aspect of my life for two main reasons. Firstly, I firmly believe that the path to physical and emotional healing goes far beyond medication. While I staunchly advocate for the usefulness of psychotropic drugs in treating mental disorders, I must also be honest and acknowledge that numerous other avenues contribute to healing both body and soul.

The second reason I am recounting my painting experience is my interest in art, leading me to delve into the biography of one of my favorite painters, Vincent van Gogh. A profoundly intricate figure, Van Gogh endured a life marked by immense suffering yet exhibited an incredible ability to communicate through his artwork.

His lifetime was fraught with turmoil, much of which has led to speculation about his mental state. Psychiatrists and neurologists who have scrutinized his biography, mainly the letters he wrote to his brother Theo, believe there is a possibility that he grappled with a mental illness. Some professionals assert that there are adequate criteria to suggest Van Gogh may have had Bipolar Disorder.

The infamous incident involving his severed ear (the debate continues regarding whether it was self-mutilation or a result of an altercation with Gauguin) and his periods of confinement in mental institutions, culminating in his tragic suicide by gunshot, serve as compelling indicators of his emotional instability.

Now, let us discuss Bipolar Disorder – once called manic depressive psychosis. Mood fluctuations characterize this mental ailment. It is relatively common, affecting around 4 to 6% of the global population. It follows a chronic and recurrent course, implying that it lacks a definitive cure, and individuals often experience multiple relapses throughout their lives.

The primary features include alternating phases of depression and episodes of mania or hypomania.

To elaborate further on the different phases and types of bipolar disorder, let us pause to recognize them better. First, what exactly do the manic and hypomanic phases involve?

It is crucial to note that, for an individual to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder, they must have experienced at least one episode of mania or hypomania during their lifetime.

For a manic episode, an elevated, expansive, or irritable mood must persist for at least one week and manifest most of the day, nearly every day. In contrast, hypomania necessitates the mood to endure for at least four consecutive days and appear most of the day, almost daily.

The symptoms for both mania and hypomania are the same, but their intensity and duration are milder during the hypomanic phase. As previously mentioned, individuals experiencing hypomania can typically maintain their daily activities, unlike those in a manic state, where control over life seems lost.

During this period, three or more of the following symptoms must be present, signifying a significant deviation from typical behavior:

Heightened self-esteem or grandiosity. Reduced need for sleep. Increased verbosity. Racing thoughts. Easily distractible. Heightened goal-directed activity or psychomotor agitation. Engaging in risky behaviors, such as excessive shopping or reckless sexual conduct.

What does the depressive phase of bipolar disorder entail?

The depressive phase of bipolar disorder encompasses a major depressive episode marked by a pervasive low mood or diminished interest or pleasure in life.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) outlines that an individual must exhibit five or more of the following symptoms within two weeks to receive a diagnosis of a major depressive episode:

Persistent low mood almost every day. Loss of interest or pleasure in almost all activities. Significant alteration in appetite (increase or decrease) and body weight. Restless or purposeless movements, like pacing. Fatigue or decreased energy. Feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Diminished capacity to concentrate or make decisions. Frequent thoughts of death, recurrent suicidal ideation without a specific plan, or suicide attempts.

Having delineated the nature of the various phases, we can now elucidate the two types of bipolar disorder mentioned earlier:

Bipolar I disorder: Features at least one manic episode, which may be preceded or followed by a hypomanic or major depressive episode. In certain instances, mania may lead to detachment from reality (psychosis). Bipolar II disorder: Encompasses one depressive episode alternating with a hypomanic episode, while a full-blown manic episode has not occurred. Are these concepts of mania, hypomania, depression, and bipolar disorder type 1 and 2 now well-understood?

Returning to Van Gogh’s life, much about his creativity, genius, and artistic prowess has been celebrated amidst grappling with bipolar disorder. A closer examination of the painter’s biography reveals various periods of darkness, melancholy, and pronounced depression. Conversely, his works also capture the vibrancy, light, and extraordinary productivity intervals.

Though Van Gogh dedicated less than a decade to painting, he is now celebrated as one of his era’s most prolific artists. His portfolio comprises over 800 pieces showcased in prestigious museums across the globe—a recognition he regrettably never witnessed during his lifetime.

In conclusion, it is worth noting that while bipolar disorder remains incurable, it is certainly treatable. Medication, psychotherapy, and psychoeducation, combined with a wholesome lifestyle encompassing outlets for tension, enable individuals to lead everyday, productive lives.

Recognizing the symptoms and seeking timely assistance from a mental health professional are the initial strides toward recovery.

I want to assure you that bipolar disorder, while not curable, is indeed manageable. Medications, psychotherapy, psychoeducation, and a healthy lifestyle that includes outlets to manage our stress, enable individuals to lead a normal and productive life.

Recognizing the symptoms and seeking early assistance from a mental health professional are the first steps to recovery. If someone is struggling with mood swings, extreme shifts in energy, or other symptoms mentioned earlier, do not hesitate to contact a mental health specialist for evaluation and guidance.

Vincent van Gogh’s story teaches us that art can provide an outlet for expression, even amid immense challenges. While not everyone is an artist, creative pursuits like painting, writing, or engaging with nature, as previously discussed, can provide solace and contribute to mental well-being.

Just as Van Gogh’s art communicated his inner struggles and triumphs, seeking help, understanding mental health, and finding coping strategies can lead to a brighter and more fulfilling life.

So, whether an artist, a gardener, or someone who finds meaning in other activities, I encourage you to explore and embrace those pursuits that bring joy, insight, and peace. In doing so, a person takes a significant step toward nurturing emotional and psychological well-being.

Thanks for reading and accompanying me on this journey. If someone has questions or wants to share thoughts or experiences, I am here to listen and engage in this critical conversation about mental health and holistic well-being.

Throughout my life, I have been fascinated with the arts, especially painting.
