It is a severe and common mental illness that predominantly affects our mood.

This condition gives rise to emotions of profound sadness, a loss of interest in once-enjoyable activities, and shifts in appetite, weight, and sleep patterns. Furthermore, it results in difficulties focusing on daily tasks, feelings of guilt, and in some cases, even thoughts of suicide or a desire to cease living.

For these symptoms to be classified as depression, they must persist for a minimum of two weeks, and their intensity should be such that they interfere with the ability to conduct daily activities, including work, studies, or household chores.

It is vital to distinguish between the ordinary experience of feeling down due to a disagreement with a friend or family member or a tough day at work and the deep-rooted state of depression that hinders one’s ability to function in life.

Now, let us explore why some individuals become depressed while others do not. What factors contribute to the onset of depression? Let us delve into these inquiries.

Like many mental illnesses, the origins of depression are multifaceted, implying that no single cause can elucidate why someone develops this condition.

Among the contributing factors for depression are genetic inheritance, biological predisposition, and the environment in which an individual matures.

When a person has immediate family members diagnosed with depression, the likelihood of them experiencing the same condition is higher than someone without such a familial history.

The biological aspect is another pivotal factor. Our brain encompasses countless neurons, which communicate to carry out myriad functions essential for human life, such as mood regulation, cognitive abilities (including learning, memory, concentration, and language), and more.

Neurons communicate by releasing chemicals known as neurotransmitters, serving as messengers between these cells. Some of these neurotransmitters include serotonin, noradrenaline, and dopamine.

In the case of a depressed individual, these substances exist in an imbalance, thus initiating the array of symptoms discussed earlier.

Why does this imbalance emerge? Numerous hypotheses aim to explain this phenomenon, yet we still have no definitive answer. The environment plays a significant role, as emotionally challenging situations can often trigger major depression.

Not only that, but psychologically traumatic experiences during the formative years can pave the way for a personality that’s more susceptible to stressors. When combined with the genetic and biological factors we have outlined, this creates the ideal conditions for depression to take hold.

Perhaps some people are still contemplating whether they are dealing with significant depression. We have delved into the symptoms and multifaceted causes of this mental illness, but how can one ascertain if they are truly depressed?

Psychiatrists are professionals trained to diagnose and treat depression. Through patient interviews, we construct a Psychiatric Medical History that comprehensively documents various aspects of an individual’s life, medical history, family history, and a thorough physical examination.

In addition to a comprehensive medical history, we supplement our assessment with laboratory tests to rule out non-psychiatric medical conditions that might manifest similarly to depression. For instance, thyroid problems, neurological disorders, and immunological diseases are among those considered.

Further tools that aid in confirming a depression diagnosis (or diagnosing other mental disorders) are Rating Scales. These clinical assessment tools assign numerical values to each symptom, allowing for an aggregate score that determines whether the patient is experiencing depression.

The responsibility of interpreting these values falls on the psychiatrist. However, there are also Patient Questionnaires, akin to rating scales filled out by the patient. Many are available online and can assist those uncertain about seeking professional assistance.

In closing, I would like to provide you with the PHQ-9 questionnaire for depression, hoping that its completion will help each of you answer the question that sparked this discussion.

Let me remind you that depression is a treatable condition. With medication and psychotherapy, individuals can reclaim their mental well-being.

Dear friends of mindZenter, Let us begin by delving into the concept of depression.
